Well it has been a while folks, and yes you guessed it...........I decided not to re-run as your Mayor for Kaikoura again. A decision not taken lightly but one which needed to be made.

Life after the chains???????? Well, I sleep better, have a better paying job and am accruing aven more clothes that have shrunk in the back of the wardrobe.

Some cry " CONSPIRACY!!!!" others say " Good on Ya!- I say I now work for an organisation that is large and had the potential to be a huge elephant. But from the inside I see many, many good people trying thier damndest to do the right thing for our Environment and our place. I intend to be one of those!

Bizzare that I was indeed part of the Mayoral Group who complained to the Govt. of communities growing angst over this Organisation. The consequenses of that complaint has gone far beyond what the Mayoral groups focus was on , but so be it.
We now look forward to a change in direction in how we do things but remembering the reasons we exist and that there is a bottom line.

Environment Canterbury or Canterbury Regional Council is where I am at, and I am proud to be here!

Greetings

It will be evident by now that I will not be standing for the Mayoralty of the Kaikoura District this election . The decision to not stand has been an extremely difficult one to reach, but one which Carolyn and I are comfortable and happy with.
It is a decision that is based around personal and family reasons - which have always taken priority over our life choices and which I am proud to say (mostly) we have never regretted and will continue to take precedence.
Being the Mayor of this District has been an absolute high light in our lives, a job that I have loved and, we believe, been very good at. I am extremely proud that each and every pledge I made & was elected on have all been fulfilled.
To serve this community by promoting it and ensuring its voice is heard at every opportunity, has been an honour, a privilege, a challenge and ultimately, hugely rewarding- as has been the opportunity to listen to, and be proactive to, the needs and issues of individuals and groups within our community. To have the opportunity to do this locally, regionally and as of late, nationally, has been an amazing journey.
The exciting and progressive projects that are on the horizon are ready to rock’n’roll. I have never been a monument builder. I do not need to personally cut the ribbon or kiss the baby-I am merely proud to have been part of the vision, the conception and to watch the growing and be around for the completion.
I need to say that the people we have to manage our district along with our mana whenua are exceptional in what they do and the visions they have. To those who find difficulty in acknowledging that-fools be you!
To the two councils I have worked with – legends all! To all those who have supported my Mayoralty, advised me, sought my assistance, worked, laughed, walked with and drove me-thank you. To those who didn’t... I know where you live!
Seriously, I have been asked for my opinion as to where to from here, with the ensuing elections. I have 4 pearls of wisdom to share.
1. Get off the couch and vote! (Millions globally have died for the right to do so).
2. Vote only for the people you would have around for a BBQ........
3. And only vote for them.
4. Vote to ensure the incoming council can hit the ground running.
Advice you may not need or want............... but then I always did have an opinion!
In closing ................ take some time, grab a sunset, or if the alarm goes off- a sunrise, listen to some Bob Dylan, pull out those Beatles vinyl’s, look to the sky and .........take some more time.
